A Day in the Black Forest

We were a little later to bed last night than we probably should have been – we did watch a 3D movie.

However we still made it to the station to catch a train just before 10am.  The first place we went to was Seebrugg at the eastern end of Lake Schluchsee.  We did consider taking a boat trip on the lake but just ended up taking photos instead…

We then caught the train to the city of Freiburg.  We ended up talking to a student who was conducting a survey for the rail company on train patronage.  Consequently, we missed taking photos of the passing scenery – not that taking photos from the train is entirely successful.  Often there are reflections from the lights in the train and/or the sunlight from outside the train and sometimes the windows are just plain dirty!  If Anna and I have failed to take photos, we are not above quoting John Brierley, the author of one camino guide I have.  He suggests not taking a camera on the camino, so you’ll be able to live for the moment rather than memories.  We’ve changed it a bit though, to saying “take pictures with your mind”.  But I still like to take photos!  I thought we would be passing through the same area on our way back to Donaueschingen and could take photos then – however it was getting dark.  We could see the passing scenery, but not keep a record of it!

In Freiburg we made our way to the tourist information centre and got instructions on how to get to the Schauinsland cable car – a tram and a bus, the price of which was covered by a KONUS (visitor) card we got from the hotel.

The Upper Station of the cable car is at 1,220 metres which affords a great view…

We had lunch at the café at the Upper Station.  What does one eat for dessert when one is in the Black Forest…

All in all, we had a great day.  We are off to Hamburg tomorrow.
